Woodturner Yoshizou Nishiwaki
(Member of the Japan Woodturners' Association, Nagano Prefecture Woodcraft Instructor)
Our products begin with my predecessor's search for raw timber. He searched for wood with forest owners in Nagano Prefecture and neighboring prefectures, and the artisan himself felled the trees. There were many years when we prepared several truckloads of fine timber, but over the years, large, aged trees became scarce. Even buying from the market has become quite expensive, so we carefully craft products from the raw timber left to us by my predecessor. I feel a sense of mission to appreciate such precious wood and to bring out its maximum beauty. Woodcraft may seem simple and understated at first glance, but I believe it is a job that can convey the proof that a tree lived for decades, even centuries. By carefully seasoning raw timber for decades, I teach the wood the seasons and determine the timing for product creation with my own hands. Perhaps I hear the voice of the wood, something only those who have worked with wood for many years can know.
